Having only been established as recently as 2oo2, Central Otago's Burn Cottage is already a New Zealand institution. Marquis & Dianne Sauvage purchased the unplanted property from sheep farmers and set to work planning their vineyard, which has been farmed biodynamically since the beginning and overlooked by head winemaker, Ted Lemon. Positioned in a sheltered bowl in the foothills of the dramatic Mount Pisa, it's a magnificent site for growing vines, and the quality of these wines well and truly speak for themselves. Burn Cottage's flagship Pinot Noir is often touted as one of the best examples of Pinot Noir outside Burgundy. Beautifully complex with a focussed intensity, it has a perfumed nose of red fruits, dried lavender, and gentle wood smoke followed by notes of fleshy cherries, blood orange, alpine herbs, and dusty spice with soft acidity and elegant, velvety tannins. It's a wine that's best experienced after some time in the cellar, although it will certainly reward those who choose to drink it now.

Burn Cottage Pinot Noir 2018

Positioned in a sheltered bowl in the foothills of the dramatic Mount Pisa, it's a magnificent site for growing vines, and the quality of these wines well and truly speak for themselves. Cromprising of 65% Riesling and 35% Grüner Veltiner, this is a delicate and complex wine. Both varieties underwent a short skin maceration separately (with the Riesling left as whole bunches) before being blended and fermented together in neutral oak, where they remained to mature for a further 11 months. Enticing aromas of lime cordial, chamomile, and apricots leap from the glass, with white peach, butterscotch, and earthy spice on the palate. There's a little chewy, chalky tannin giving the wine some texture and depth, with citrusy acidity adding gorgeous length and persistence.

The Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is a blend of two vineyards: The Burn Cottage vineyard, and the winery's more recently acquired Sauvage vineyard in Bannockburn. It's a lovely wine that embodies a more immediate and playful side of Central Otago Pinot Noir - though not without the complexity that Burn Cottage is known for. Redcurrant, black cherry, savoury herbs, and woody spices, with a touch of minty freshness and floral perfume. The tannins are firm and mouthcoating, though they're more gentle and supple than Burn Cottage's more structured Estate cuvée.
