The wines of Barbacàn are made in the pristine alpine valleys of Valtellina, in northern Italy's Lombardy region. Angelo Sega and his sons, Luca and Matteo, farm three hectares of dramatically terraced vineyards, all planted to Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) and handled with organic principles. The Söl Valtellina Superiore Valgella is a powerful yet refined wine. Söl is the local dialect word for 'soil', which is a fitting name for a wine from a region that uses its distinctive terroir to make its mark against the Nebbiolo wines of the famed Piedmont region. Aged for 12 months in large oak barrels, it has an inviting palate of red fruits, rose petal, cracked pepper, and woodsmoke around a core of rustic tannins and savoury, graphite-like minerality.
